WHAT HAPPENS IF IT TAKES ME LONGER THAN 3-HOURS TO COMPLETE THE BOATSMART! COURSE? WILL I NEED TO START OVER?
The 3-hour timer is only a minimum requirement. You’re free to spend as much time as you need in the BOATsmart! Knowledge Base before taking the Final Test.
IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE FOR PWC OPERATORS IN FLORIDA?
Yes, PWC operators are required to be at least 14 years of age in the state of Florida. It is illegal for any boaters younger than 14 to operate a PWC, regardless of their boater certifications.
WILL MY FLORIDA BOATING EDUCATION I.D. CARD BE VALID FOR BOATING IN OTHER STATES?
Yes! The BOATsmart! Card is accepted in 40 other states, which extend reciprocity to certified boaters. This law applies to operators of motorized boats (who have taken and passed a NASBLA approved boating safety course), but does not apply in all states to operators of personal watercraft (PWCs). Always check the boating laws in the state you plan to visit before operating a boat or PWC there.
ARE THERE CLASSROOM BOATING COURSES IN FLORIDA?

CAN I DRINK ALCOHOL WHILE BOATING IN FLORIDA?
In Florida it is illegal to operate a boat, or use water-skis, a sailboard, or a similar device, while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. In Florida, boaters are considered to be under the influence if they have a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) level of 0.08% or higher. A level of 0.05-0.08% may also indicate that an operator is under the influence, if accompanied by other evidence). Additionally, boaters under the age of 21 are considered to be under the influence if they have a BAC level of 0.02% or higher. WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE A PERSONAL WATERCRAFT (PWC) OPERATOR IS REQUIRED TO BE IN FLORIDA?
PWC operators in Florida are required to be at least 14 years of age. PWCs are commonly known in Florida as ‘Wave Runners’ and Jet Skis’. Learn more about PWC safety and handling characteristics by taking the BOATsmart! Florida Course.
IS MY FLORIDA BOATSMART! CARD THE SAME THING AS A FLORIDA BOATING SAFETY EDUCATION I.D. CARD OR ‘BOATING LICENSE’?
Yes, your BOATsmart! Card is the same as a Florida Boating Education I.D. Card. In Florida the ‘Card’ is commonly referred to as a ‘Boating License’, although this is not the correct term.
HOW DO I REPLACE MY FLORIDA BOATING LICENSE IF I LOST IT OR IT WAS ACCIDENTALLY DESTROYED?
If you’ve lost or destroyed your Florida Boating Education I.D. Card, you can easily order a Replacement Card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission by calling them at 850-488-5600.
DO I NEED A BOATING LICENSE TO RENT A BOAT IN FLORIDA?
If you’re a visitor to Florida and you don’t meet the conditions to be exempted from the state’s requirements for mandatory boater education, you can get a temporary certificate in order to rent a boat during your visit. These certificates are valid for one year and are available from vendors located all over the state.
WILL MY BOATSMART! CARD EVER EXPIRE?
Your BOATsmart! Card will never expire. But stay in touch after you pass the test – BOATsmart! offers free, online refresher lessons that will help you keep your boating skill and knowledge up to date as years pass and boating regulations change.
DO I NEED TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET WHEN BOATING IN FLORIDA?
The only boaters required to WEAR their life jackets in the state of Florida are:
- Children 6 years of age and under who are on boats under 26 feet in length that are underway.
- PWC operators and passengers (inflatable life jackets are not permitted in Florida for PWC passengers).
- Passengers being towed by a boat or PWC (inflatable life jackets are not permitted in Florida towed sport participants).
WHAT FINES AND/OR PENALTIES WILL A BOATER CAUGHT OPERATING WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE FACE ON FLORIDA’S WATERS?
On a first conviction, drunk boaters will face a minimum fine of $500, and up to 6 months imprisonment. Subsequent convictions will carry heavier fines and penalties. Take the BOATsmart! DO I NEED A DRIVER’S LICENSE TO OPERATE A MOTORIZED BOAT?
No. The state of California does not require boaters to have a driver’s license in order to operate a boat. However, boaters are encouraged to obtain a California Boater Education Card – hit the waters with confidence!
DO FLORIDA BOATERS NEED TO HAVE A BOATER EDUCATION CARD?
Yes, in Florida this card is known as the Florida Boating Safety I.D. Card and it is required if you were born after Dec. 31, 1987 and are operating a motorized boat powered by an engine of 10 HP or greater. Most other states and most of Canada’s provinces and territories also require boaters to carry a Boater Education Card, more commonly known as a ‘Boating License’. Get the Card, even if you aren’t required to in Florida, and you’ll be good to go boating in most of North America.
WHO ENFORCES FLORIDA’S BOATING LAWS?

- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and its officers
- The U.S. Coast Guard (on joint jurisdictional waters)
