Module 04 - Safe Boat Operation

Loading People and Equipment

Loading your boat incorrectly can result in unpredictable boat handling. This will increase your risk of being swamped by a wave and may cause a capsizing emergency.

To load your boat correctly always ensure that you:

  • Never overload your boat beyond its safe carrying capacity
  • Always distribute the weight of passengers (guests) and equipment evenly.

When loading a pleasure craft:

Step 1: Consult the boats Compliance Notice and ensure that:

  • Equipment and people do not exceed the ‘recommended gross load capacity’ of the boat
  • The number of people on board does exceed the number of adults that the boat is capable of safely carrying

Step 2: Position equipment and people so that weight is evenly distributed and as low as possible throughout the boat.

Step 3: Store equipment and gear properly, in an accessible location, to prevent shifting once the boat is underway.

Step 4: Ensure each passenger (guest) is wearing a properly fitted and approved PFD or lifejacket.

Step 5: The operator should board first and then assist each passenger (guest) aboard. Each person should be properly seated and positioned before the next person comes aboard.
