Rider Basics

ATV Terminology: The Parts

Rack:
Located at the rear of the ATV (behind the operator), equipment can be firmly strapped and transported on the ATV rack. Always check the owner’s manual for the rack and ATV capacity and never overload it.
Spark Arrestor:
Required by law, this is a small screen or object located in the ATV’s muffler, that’s used to trap or prevent flammable debris from escaping.
Muffler:
ATVs are required by law to be equipped with a muffling device that will reduce the noise produced by the engine.
Foot Rest:
A platform or bar on which the rider keeps their feet firmly planted while operating.
Drive Shaft:
A mechanical device that transmits power to the rear axle, and allows the ATV to move.
Drive Chain:
The chain that connects the engine to the rear axle and allows the ATV to move.
Winch:
A pulling device used, for hauling or lifting. Located at the front of the machine, the winch uses rope, cable or chain that wind around a rotating drum, using a crank or motor. Winches are used for removing trail obstacles, pulling other machines out of the mud and for loading machines onto trailer beds.
Suspension:
The suspension on your machine helps to absorb the impact when riding on uneven, rocky or rugged terrain.
Tires:
ATV tires are low pressure tires that have knobby, large tread for ‘grabbing’ at loose or rugged terrain. They are NOT designed for travel on paved roads.
Lights:
ATVs are often equipped with headlights and/or tail lights to provide visibility at night or for riding during conditions of low visibility, like stormy or foggy weather.
