Before Heading Out
Buy a map and get to know the trails and landforms for the area where you’ll be riding. If you aren’t sure where you’re allowed to ride, call the local authorities to see if there are any restrictions or regulations in effect. Some areas may also have seasonal trail closures. Know before you go.
You should also find out about local regulations for any sound level restrictions, spark arrestor requirements, age restrictions, training requirements and registration requirements. If you’re from out of state, check with local authorities to see if you’ll need to obtain a temporary permit to ride in that area.
Determine which trail your group should take based on the capability of the riders in your group and the capability of their machines. Remember, dirt bikes, ATVs and side-by-sides are very different types of machines, and they will have very different capabilities and limitations depending on the terrain. Read your map carefully and make the right choice as a group.
