Module 01 - HUNTING BASICS

KNOW YOUR AMMO

Illustration of different types of ammunition, including cartridges, shotgun cartridges and muzzleloader ammunition.

Ammunition or ‘ammo’ consists of a cartridge with a projectile inside (like bullets, slugs or shot). It’s designed to allow the projectile to discharge from your firearm. Modern ammo varies in size, appearance, parts and materials.

Your firearm will require a specific type of ammunition to function properly. Failing to use the correct type of ammo can cause all kinds of trouble. Know exactly what kind of ammo you need and never take a guess at it.

In addition to matching your ammo to your firearm, your choice of cartridge or shotshell should also be based on what you need for the game animal you’re hunting and the hunting regulations that apply in your state.

Remember: Along with ensuring that the ammo you choose is appropriate for your firearm, you must ensure that it will kill the game you’re hunting quickly, and effectively. The manufacturer can recommend which ammunition is best for the type of game you’ll be hunting. Always practice with your ammunition before heading out to make sure you’re comfortable with the recoil.
