OHV Skills Test

After passing the online portion of the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) education course, you are required to attend a Skills Test in your area to complete your off-road safety certification.

IDAHO OHV/ORV Regulations

Who needs it

All OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) and ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) operators in Idaho are encouraged to complete an OHV safety education course before operating on public lands, roads or trails.

Persons 16 years old and younger are required to obtain offroad education if they do not hold a driver’s license and will be riding on U.S. Forest Service roads in Idaho.

All riders in Idaho who are under the age of 16 must be under direct supervision of an adult when operating on non-local jurisdiction roads.

Safety Equipment

All ATV riders should wear an approved helmet at ALL times when riding their ATV, regardless of their age or experience level. In Idaho, a helmet is mandatory for all riders (operators AND passengers) under the age of 18. Helmets must have at least a “DOT Approved” safety rating for motorized use.

It is highly recommended that all riders also wear gloves, long sleeved shirt, long pants and over-the-ankle boots that are designed to offer added protection for ATV riders.

What is the Certificate of Completion?

The Certificate of Completion is proof that you have successfully completed the online portion of the ATVsmart! course. You must show this Certificate at your in-person Skills Test in order to complete the Test and get your Idaho OHV Safety Certificate.

How long is the off-road safety course?

It will take approximately 3 hours to complete the course (including module quizzes) and final exam.

What is the passing grade for the course?

You must achieve a grade of 80% (8/10) or higher to pass each module quiz. Then you must also achieve a grade of 80% (48/60) or higher to pass the final exam.

When I complete this online course, do I need to take hands-on ATV training?

Yes. In addition to completing the online portion of the ATV Safety Course, there is a required hands-on riding course or Skills Test. Upon successful completion of both the online and hands-on portions of the course, participants receive an OHV Safety Certificate.
