3. Get on the water
Once you pass the test, you can print your temporary card and use it immediately. Your permanent New Mexico Boater Education Card, the Official New Mexico Boating License, will arrive by mail within four weeks.

Do I need a license to drive a boat in New Mexico?
A person born on or after January 1, 1989 who operates a motorboat on the state’s waters shall possess a division-issued boater education card and have it onboard the motorboat during its operation.

DO I NEED A NEW MEXICO DRIVER’S LICENSE IN ORDER TO OPERATE A MOTORIZED BOAT ON STATE WATERS?
No. Boaters are not required to have a driver’s license in order to legally operate a boat in New Mexico.
WILL MY BOATSMART! NEW MEXICO BOATING LICENSE EVER EXPIRE?
Your BOATsmart! Card will never expire. But stay in touch after you pass the test – BOATsmart! offers free, online refresher lessons that will help you keep your boating skill and knowledge up to date as years pass and boating regulations change.
WHO IS REQUIRED TO WEAR LIFE JACKETS WHEN BOATING IN NEW MEXICO?
The only boaters REQUIRED to wear life jackets while boating in New Mexico are:
Children 12 years of age and under who are on board any boats that are underway.
PWC operators and passengers.
Paddle craft operators and passengers.
Passengers being towed behind a boat (i.e. water-skiers).
WHAT HAPPENS IF IT TAKES ME LONGER THAN 3-HOURS TO COMPLETE THE BOATSMART! COURSE? WILL I NEED TO START OVER?
The 3-hour timer is only a minimum requirement. You’re free to spend as much time as you need in the BOATsmart! Knowledge Base before taking the Final Test.
