          Fuelling: The Rule of Thirds

Running out of fuel is the number one cause of boater distress on the water. Always plan ahead, and make sure you’ve got enough fuel for the entire trip!
An easy way to make sure you won’t spend your day stranded after running out of gas is to use the rule of thirds, when considering the amount of fuel required for your trip:
This means you’ll have:
- 1/3 of a tank for the trip out
 - 1/3 of a tank for the trip back
 - 1/3 of a tank kept in reserve
