Module 03 - Before Heading Out

Local Forecasts

Understanding weather and water conditions is essential to boating safely. Heading out on the boat without checking for weather hazards may put your boat and passengers (guests) in danger.

You should always check the local weather forecast for current information before heading out on the water.

Local forecasts are available from:

  • Local radio
  • Television weather forecast
  • Radiotelephone
  • The Meteorological Service of Canada
  • weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca

VHF weather forecasts

Environment Canada provides marine weather forecasts on the following frequencies:

  • Atlantic coast and Great Lakes: Use VHF Channel 21B, 25B and 83B
  • Pacific coast: Use VHF Channel 21B and Wx1, 2, 3.
