Module 07 - Emergency Preparedness

Using Fuel Burning Appliances

Some fuel-burning appliances which use propane or butane can create fuel vapours that are heavier than air. These vapours will flow into the lower portions of your boat, can be hard to remove, and are highly explosive.

Always follow the safety procedures below if you’re using propane or butane on board your boat:

  • Use these appliances only in well-ventilated areas
  • Be sure that gas cylinders and portable appliances such as heaters are properly secured
  • Never leave appliances with open flames unattended
  • Always be sure to install fuel-burning equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions
