SAFETY RULES FOR TRAVELING OVER FROZEN WATERWAYS:

  • ALWAYS use extreme caution and travel at low speeds.
  • Be prepared to have less traction when starting, turning and stopping.
  • Always leave plenty of space between you and the other riders.
  • Leave yourself lots of distance when stopping, let up on the throttle and let your machine coast to a gentle stop. Don't slam on your brakes, you’ll lose control.
  • Ride in the seated position to allow for the best balance and the most control.
  • Be aware that collisions on lakes account for a significant number of snowmobile accidents throughout the season.
  • Be aware that lakes are NOT wide open, free-for-all areas. Careless operation on lakes by you or by other riders can easily result in a collision.
  • Make your own decision when it comes to operating on frozen water. Don't feel pressured and don’t rely on others to make the choice. YOU are responsible for your own safety.

RIDER SAFETY TIP: FLOAT SUITS & ICE PICKS

If you’ll be riding on frozen lakes and rivers, always wear a snowmobile suit with built-in flotation. These ‘float suits’ can be a little more expensive but are well worth the investment. If a float suit isn’t in the budget, you can also wear a brightly-colored personal flotation device over top of your suit to keep you afloat if you break through the ice. It’ll also make you easier to spot in the VERY cold water.

You should also carry a set of ice picks with you. Get a pair with spring loaded sleeves, that cover the pointed ends, and attach them to a piece of rope or cord that’s threaded through the sleeves of your snowmobile suit. This way they're always available when you need them and they won’t sink to the lake bottom... with your sled.
