Module 06 - MUZZLELOADERS 101

CHECK IT YOURSELF: MUZZLELOADERS

Like with all firearms, if a muzzleloader comes into your hands, always CHECK IT YOURSELF to make sure it’s safe.

Follow these steps to properly safety check your muzzleloader:

STEP 1: Always assume the firearm is loaded.

STEP 2: Deactivate the muzzleloader by doing one of the following:

    • With flintlock muzzleloaders, open the frizzen and clean the priming powder off the flash pan with a clean rag.
    • With caplock muzzleloaders, remove the percussion cap.

STEP 3: Use a ramrod to check the bore for ammo or obstructions (you should mark the rod to show the bore depth when the bore is empty).

STEP 4: Grasp the firearm with both hands and point the muzzle in a safe direction.
