Module 04 - Safe Boat Operation

PADDLE SAFETY TIPS FOR HUNTERS AND ANGLERS:

Always wear your life jacket—they’re available in camouflage colors!

Always travel in groups. There is safety in numbers.

Complete a Float Plan and leave it with a responsible person on shore.

Keep a lookout for obstacles and other boaters—not just that prize buck!

Carry first aid supplies, extra clothing and safety gear.

Wear an immersion suit for hypothermia prevention if you’re paddling in cold water.

Never overload your paddle craft and make sure the weight is balanced.

If going for a long trip, pack your bag with re-sealable sandwich bags. The bags will keep your small equipment, snacks and supplies dry and will also help make your bag buoyant if it accidentally falls overboard.

If you have a duck hunting dog in your canoe, make sure it’s well trained for hunting. If the dog gets excited or startled by the sound of a gunshot, it might jump out of the boat and potentially cause a capsizing emergency. Remember, capsizing will be a high risk if you’re planning on hunting from a canoe.
