THE BEST DOG BREEDS FOR HUNTING

Some dogs are just better than others at chasing deer, dragging ducks from swamps and keeping their cool when pointing out a pheasant. If you’re in the market for a hunting dog, these breeds are the honorable mentions:

Spaniels

These fancy-looking, little dogs are best used for flushing out small game. They’re smart as a whip and as patient as a blade of grass.

Retrievers

These dogs have thick coats, a great sense of smell and they’re really strong swimmers! Retrievers are awesome duck hunting dogs and they make great family pets. A popular choice.

Hounds

Loud, eager and energetic, hounds can be used for hunting everything from a mountain lion to a raccoon. They’ve been known to make some noise when on a hot trail… or to holler out when a squirrel dashes across the backyard. A loud, but lovable breed.

Pointers

With proper training, these obedient and patient dogs will find your upland game bird for you, point at it and coolly wait for you to shoot it before they even move an inch.

Wise Words: Pack Treats and Watch Your Hands

Reward your dogs for their effort. Feed and water them well throughout the day. Oh, and remember that dogs tend to come to your hands for a scratch on the head, which, is where your firearm will be located. Be careful.
